Hi, I'm Nell!

I like to think of parenthood as the time we gently guide our children through the rhythms of their youth — Rhythms of Play. I am here to help you make daily life, parenting, and educating children more meaningful and fun for everyone!

What is Rhythm?

In music, rhythm is the framework that organizes notes and sounds into a resonant and harmonious whole. Without rhythm, music would be scattered, confusing, and totally chaotic. Rhythm gives music structure, flow, and balance. In many ways, rhythm functions similarly in our everyday lives. Without a rhythm to hold you steady and give you a sense of grounding, you can feel lost, unsure of yourself, and overwhelmed.

Rhythm is also an essential part of the universal energy and natural cycles that shape the multiverse around us. It is the steady pulse that keeps the beat of life itself. Most people call this energy Prana, Chi, Qi, or Nwyfre. Other favorite fictional characters, such as Yoda from Star Wars, call it “The Force.”

No matter what you call it. Rhythm is an essential part of life. It is present in the cadence of our heartbeat, the rise and fall of our breath, the ocean tides moving in and out, the phases of the moon, the rising and setting of the sun, and the seasons returning year after year. Creating a rhythm for your days that flows with the seasons and makes room for changes in your life offers a gentle, flexible support structure that helps you thrive, not just survive.

Creating More Rhythm and Flow in Your Daily Life

When we notice the nature's cycles, ebbs, and flows and align more deeply with the natural world, life feels more connected, grounded, meaningful, and abundant. Nature is constantly moving in rhythm, and we can move right along with it or fight it every step of the way. The good news is that every morning, and within each new moment of every day, you can make another choice.

A healthy rhythm supports both productivity and rest. Following a daily rhythm reminds us that life is not meant to be rushed every moment of the day. Nor is it meant to be squandered or wasted away. Instead, each moment of every day is meant to be lived, savored, and enjoyed!

Following a daily and weekly rhythm can help you create space and freedom for what you need or brings you the most joy. This can look different for everyone. For example, it can mean making time to slow down or creating peaceful moments just for yourself. Time for rest and rejuvenation is always needed, so a daily rhythm is a fantastic way to support that goal.

It can also help you spend more time outdoors, make more time to connect as a family, or create the space and energy to pursue your biggest dreams and goals. Both children and adults thrive when life has a familiar flow they can count on and engage with. Predictable rhythms help children feel safe, calm, confident, and secure because they know what comes next. Establishing a daily rhythm has similar positive benefits for adults.

Lead the Way with Rhythm and Play!

Connecting more deeply with the rhythms of the natural world brings greater balance, creativity, flow, learning, and joy to everyday life. When we slow down to notice seasonal changes, spend time outdoors, and establish healthy rhythms at home, we often find that life feels a lot less overwhelming and much more fulfilling.

I created this website to help you strengthen these connections, align more deeply with what matters most to you, find your rhythm, and go with the flow. On the Rhythms of Play website, you can find everything from nature crafts and sensory play ideas to scavenger hunts, seasonal celebrations, gardening activities, art projects, and outdoor adventures.

I love to share nature-inspired crafts, creative seasonal activities, fun and educational outdoor learning ideas, simple DIY projects, and information on creating helpful rhythms and routines, as well as playful educational tutorials and lessons for kids, families, educators, caregivers, and the young at heart.

With over 30 years of experience working with parents and children from infancy through the teen years, I’m here to help you raise creative and courageous, self-sufficient outdoor kids while building a life you truly love — one rhythm at a time.

We believe in the wonder of childhood, the power of the imagination, learning through play, making this world a greener place to live, getting outside in all seasons, going after your goals, and co-creating a life you love one rhythm at a time. Please Join Us!

Expertise & Inspiration:

I am the creator, author, photographer, craft engineer, and DIY maven who brings innovative projects and activities to life on the Rhythms of Play website. My daughter, Charlie, is my primary source of inspiration. You can see her growing up in the images and videos throughout this website.

She is the brave child who demonstrates how to do various nature activities and projects in several photo and video tutorials for the art, craft, and DIY projects we share on Rhythms of Play, such as our fingerprint magnets.

Her glowing spirit inspires me daily to shine brighter and help create a better world. She also assists me in developing new arts, crafts, and activities that we turn into lessons and fun DIY project tutorials so you and your family (or students) can enjoy them, too!

Experience:

Before I created this website, Rhythms of Play, I enjoyed several job roles, including working as an au pair (I was a nanny when I went through graduate school), child-care specialist (my husband and I owned and operated a daycare), teacher, sports coach, personal trainer, yoga instructor/therapist, and an ocean lifeguard, and EMT as well as a Junior Lifeguard and Water Program Instructor for the LACO Fire Department.

I even worked as an actor off and on throughout my life. But of all my dream jobs, my favorite is educating children and helping people achieve their personal best. For me, these are ultimately the same thing. Although working as a real-life Baywatch babe for twenty summers was fun. Inspiring people of all ages to reach for their highest potential (and enjoy life to its fullest while doing it) is even more rewarding!
